(A Service Technician's Guide to Buying a New Clothes Dryer)

Dryer Brand Info | Electric Dryers | Gas Dryers | Dryer Styles (Pros & Cons) | Questions You Should Ask | Dryer Feature Guide | Dryer Reliability Statistics

Once you have zeroed in on the clothes dryer of your dreams it's a good idea to run a background check before allowing that hot hunk of an appliance into your home... After all looks can be deceiving.

Customer Comments

Consumer comments concerning the dryer they already purchased can be a great way to learn from other people's mistakes when it comes to finding a reliable dryer. Dryer reliability comments are also a good way to pick up on chronic dryer problems related to a particular clothes dryer model or design. But you must keep in mind that people don't tend to rant & rave online about how wonderful their clothes dryer is. No news is often the sign of a great thing especially if it has been on the market for a while. Another thing to keep in mind is market volume. If millions of one clothes dryer model or style have been sold and there are 300 negative comments that's actually not to bad. But if a newly introduced design is getting bashed online it might be best to hold off until they get the bugs worked out. Dryer repair forums can also be a good way to avoid a bad dryer purchase.

Clothes Dryer Reliability & Repair Statistics

Clothes dryers are fairly simple mechanical devices, and usually the longest lasting appliances you will own.  Apply heat, move the fabric around, then get rid of the wet air…simple.  Many of the recent "amazing innovations" in drying technology are nothing more than snake oil. Keep in mind that when you buy a dryer that's more complicated, it's bound to have a few extra repair problems.
Below you will find current clothes dryer reliability and repair statistics for the most popular dryer brands.

A few things to note....

  1. 1. In my experience top lint trap dryers tend to be the most reliable dryer design.
  2. 2. You can save a significant amount of money on your dryer without sacrificing dryer quality or features by matching a high-end washing machine with a less expensive dryer.
    3. Bosch dryers may have rated well but be sure to ask if repair service is available in your area before you buy a new Bosch dryer.
