Belts and Chains
The primary purpose of belts and chains is to transfer kinetic energy from one point to another. They can connect a motor to any number of components over distances large and small. Belts often use friction to receive and distribute the energy they carry. This friction and slipping is often used in place of a clutch to reduce wear on mechanical components caused by
starting and stopping to rapidly. Engineers through the use of different materials and various amounts of tension can control this effect. Tension is usually applied to a belt with the use of a pulley. Pulleys can also magnify the amount of force transferred by a belt while reducing the amount of strain that the belt needs to bear. In some cases belts may be grooved giving them greater holding ability similar to a chain. Chains serve the same basic purpose as belts; however, they do not allow components to slip. With the use of chains a gear must be used in place of a pulley.
